Dotty

I should be spending my fabric time figuring out what I am going to do for the upcoming 12x12 challenge which requires that we use a "spice color" palette.  So far I've not had any appealing ideas come to mind, so I'm just letting it be, hoping something good will float to the surface of my distracted mind.

But meanwhile, I've been continuing my mission to use up fabric in the closet.  And that explains this quilt, which I made from a bundle of Moda "layer cake" squares I found on sale a few years ago.  I do love polka dots and these fabrics are so bright and cheerful!  This ended up almost twin-bed sized, to my surprise, but as my goal was just to use up the fabric I'm glad it did.  This is destined for the Valley of the Moon Children's Shelter, my favorite place for donating quilts.

By the way, I always have a hard time figuring out how to photograph large quilts -- my design wall isn't nearly big enough. So this morning I pinned the quilt to a big roller shade that comes off of the patio arbor outside and gave that a try.  Hardly what the Quilt Photography experts would recommend but it got the job done.  (I have heard of people using their garage doors.  Perhaps I'll try that next.)

  1. I use push pins to pin quilts to the side of my house to photograph. I like to photograph them outside on an overcast day. We have plenty of those kind of days and the light seems perfect for quilt photos.

  2. That is so pretty! Love all the polka dots! I ordered your book, and it's great! Have you thought of not trying to photograph quilts hanging straight, and flat. But, instead staging them on a railing, a bench, a branch, a chair, etc. Just photographing a portion of the quilt detail. Makes for some really interesting pictures....

  4. I bought a bunch of charcoal grey fleece (if I did it again, I'd wait for black) when it was on sale and sewed two lengths together to make a huge backdrop for my quilts. i folded over the top to make a sleeve wide enough to slip a long 1" x 4" piece of wood through. I have weighed the wood down with paint cans on the top of a cinderblock wall so the backdrop hangs in front of the wall; I've hung it by S hooks from my second floor balcony; I currently hang it from bungee cord loops hooked into the ventilation holes of the roof of our covered patio (lanai). I've found the backdrop and sturdy "pole" to be a very flexible solution. The next problem is having enough space to back up and take the photo!

  5. I like the whimsy of this quilt. Perfect for a children's shelter. BTW does the phrase "variety is the SPICE of life" generate any ideas for your 12 x 12 challenge?
